CALL FOR PAPERS
Asian American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, in cooperation with the "Rape of Nanking" Redress Coalition (RNRC), a broad coalition of Asian American community organizations in the San Francisco bay area, will host an international scholarly conference on the wartime atrocities committed by Japanese military invasions into fifteen Asian countries during the Pacific War, 1937-1945.
The conference will be held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan in San Francisco. While the governments of the two countries are planning to celebrate the anniversary in San Francisco, Asian Americans and Asians through East and Southeast Asia view the anniversary with sadness and indignation and consider the treaty symbolic of 50 years of uninterrupted denial of Japan's wartime responsibilities and steadfast refusal by the Japanese government to formally acknowledge and apologize for its wartime atrocities through a legislation enacted by its Diet (parliament).
The conference welcomes original research papers, eye-witness accounts, creative works on all aspects of wartime atrocities committed by Japanese militarism in all Asian countries. The conference is interested in new research done by indigenous scholars in each of the Asian countries and comparative and transnational historical studies on the subject. The conference also welcomes Japanese scholars, professional and civic groups, who are committed to the preservation of truth during the war both inside ad outside Japan.
Abstracts, not to exceed two pages, should be
