Conference 1: University of Nottingham in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, 10-12 July 2003

Conference 2: University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, April 2004

Cultures, Theories and Critiques will be interdisciplinary conferences examining the transformation and development of critical and cultural theories. The conference will critique and reconstruct theories, relocating them in new sites and conjunctures. It will focus on theoretical refinement and innovation, interactions and hybridisations.

Contributors are invited to:

  • assess how well theories emerging from particular spatial, cultural, geographical and historical contexts travel and translate into new conjunctures;
  • confront theories with their limitations or aporias through immanent critique;
  • apply theories to cultural, literary, social and political phenomena in order to test them against their respective fields of concern and to generate critical feedback;
  • consider what is critical about critical theory, and whether other discourses offer more effective critiques;
  • interrelate theories from different intellectual, disciplinary and institutional settings.

Cultures, Theories and Critiques will welcome contributions from the following areas: gender studies, cultural studies, critical geography, historiography, literary theory and criticism, film studies, philosophy, postcolonialism, social and political theory and visual culture.

Further information on conference registration, fees and accommodation shall appear here in due course.

Abstracts of proposed papers, of 150-200 words in length, should be sent for the Kuala Lumpur conference by 1 March 2003, and for the Nottingham Conference by 1 December 2003 to:
