Objective and Development of NCU Inst. of Materials Science and
Engineering
Materials
science issues involving environmental protection and cleaner processing is
now a very important factor in various industrial fields. NCU Institute of
Materials Science and Engineering (IMSE) are dedicated on developing such
issues. NCU IMSE established in August, 2004 has lots of excellent
faculties and staffs form related fields such as Chemical Engineering and
Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Inst. of Optics
and Photonics. The purposes of foundation of IMSE are to catch the
worldwide technological trends, to satisfy the industry¡¦s needs of talents,
and to provide a good learning atmosphere for students.
Characteristics of NCU IMSE
v Excellent
faculty: there are more than 20 professors with strong academic background
related to MSE.
v Precise
experimental equipments and research resource.
v Specific geographic
environment: National Central University lies in the heart of Taoyuan
within 2 hours¡¦ driving time of Industrial Technology Research Institute,
several industrial parks in Taoyuan city, Chung-Li city, Pingjen city, etc.
to form a central research and academic location in Taoyuan City and
County.
v Develop
direction: NCU will be truly integrated world-class research and teaching
systems in materials science with vastly superior support.
Program Outline
IMSE offers the degrees of Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of
Philosophy (Ph.D.). Both the required courses and elective
courses need to be taken. There are 4 required courses:
Advanced Physical Metallurgy, Thermodynamics of Materials, Kinetic Process
of Materials, and X-ray Crystallography. Students must take at least 3
required courses and pass 2 of them. To meet the graduation requirements,
students of M.S. program must earn a minimum 24 credits in 1 to 4 years,
while students of Ph.D. program are required to complete 18 credits in 2 to
7 years. Graduate Seminar is a non-credit required course that all graduate students must enroll in
their first two years of study. Master thesis and Ph.D. dissertation are
also parts of the requirements for completion of the graduate degrees.
v Course
Features
The course
arrangement is designed to provide fundamentals of materials engineering
and prepare students for research work. Advanced courses in various fields
including phase transformation, surface analysis, advanced materials and
processing, semiconductor materials and processing, hydrogen energy
materials, and nanomaterials are offered to the students.

Introduction

National
Central University (NCU) is a great school to pursue further knowledge. It
is located in Taiwan, a small island in the Pacific Ocean. It is situated
on the northern part of the island on a remote hilltop some distance away
from the busy city of Taoyuan. The campus covers up to 62.5 hectares, the
school boasts of possessing the best green pines in the country, with the
pine's evergreen qualities symbolizing its preserving spirit. In recent
years, NCU has been obtained a significant number of government grants in
support of our excellent academic projects.
NCU are
the leading university in the following fields: Remote Sensing Science and
Technology, Microelectronics Research, Optical Science Research, Nano
Science Research, Plasma-Crystal Lab, Astronomical Research,
Seismo-Electromagnetic Precursors, Sustainable Development, Atmospheric
Radar Research, and Bridge Management System.
As the
top research-oriented university in Taiwan, NCU is rapidly gaining
international attention. In NCU, students are expected to develop both
intellectual qualities and upright character. Ethics teaching is an
integral part of our general education, and leadership education is as
important as the pursuit of academic excellence. In the Globalization Age,
each student is encouraged to develop his own broad international
experience, sound world view and global concerns.

Established
in 1969, the College of Engineering of NCU is now comprised of three
departments and seven graduate institutes. The departments include the
Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, the Department of Civil
Engineering, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Graduate
Institutes include Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering and
Management, Energy Engineering, Opto-Mechatronics, and Material Science and
Engineering.

All
departments offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees and all the graduate institutes
offer the MS and PhD degrees. The College of Engineering consists of a
strong group of about 100 faculty members and 2,500 students, including
both undergraduates and graduates. The faculty members are active in their
own research fields and obtain research funds granted from the National
Science Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Defense,
and some other governmental organizations.
Research
collaborations with domestic industries are also encouraged. The efforts
and contributions of the faculty have been well recognized by people or
organizations that have had cooperation with or have been assisted by this
college. By the facilitation of advanced research equipments, the research
activities can be carried on, and the contribution of the research results
is well observed through published technical reports and academic journals
papers and issued patents.
