A Century of Progress：The Impact of NCU on the Republic of China
Over the course of a century of history and experience, NCU has contributed much to the directions of the country and society and cultivated countless talented individuals. June 6th marks the launch of the university anniversary forum, “A Century of Influence – NCU and Taiwan” to which ten distinguished speakers were invited to speak from their various perspectives and recount the achievements of NCU alumni in different sectors over the past century, as well as share the deep influences of NCU on education, politics and economics, literature and art, science and society.
NCU President Jing-Yang Jou expressed in his opening speech that the history of NCU and Taiwan R.O.C. have run parallel and both have provided mutual support over the past century. Both were previously based in Nanjing. During the Japanese Occupation, both relocated to Chongqing and amidst the political relocation of 1949, the government relocated to Taiwan while NCU moved first to Miaoli and then to Zhongli. Over the past century, many hardships were endured but NCU never wavered in its mission to cultivate talented personnel for the country, thus having an undeniable influence over the country and society.
In the first half, five former university presidents were invited to give speeches in succession, “NCU Relocation and Establishment in Taiwan” by president Yu Chuan-Tao; “The Contributions of NCU to Fundamental Sciences” by president Liu Quan-Sheng; “The Contributions of NCU to Sustainable Development” by president Lou-Chuang Lee; “The Contributions of NCU to the Taiwanese Education System” by president Wei-Ling Chiang; and “The Role and Contributions of NCU in Taiwan’s Economic Legacy” by acting president Joseph S. Lee.
In addition, Director of Yu Chi-Chung Cultural & Educational Foundation, Yu Fan-Ying gave a speech on “The Contributions of NCU to Taiwan News and Media Development”; former Judicial Yuan President Weng Yueh-Seng gave a speech on “NCU and Taiwan Chief Justices”; HuaFan University President Zhu Jian-Min gave a speech on “NCU and the Development of New Confucianism”; Chinese Faculty Professor Jui-Teng Lee gave a speech on “NCU and Distinguished Litterateurs”; Graduate Institute of Arts Professor Fang-Cheng Wu gave a speech on “NCU and Distinguished Artists”; and former university president Chao-Han Liu was in charge of the concluding statement. Regardless of education, culture or technology and innovations, NCU has always played an important role.
