International Science Interaction: 2015 GLOBE Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting and Students Expedition
With support from the Ministry of Science and Technology and NCU, organized by GLOBE Taiwan Office, the “2015 GLOBE Asia and Pacific Regional Meeting and Students Expedition” was officially launched on April 26th. This year’s event also celebrated 20 years of the GLOBE Program. Over 180 participants from 12 countries were invited to experience the passion and vigor of Taiwan and also to stimulate students into participating in the GLOBE Program and allow us to show concern for the planet we call home.
Dr. Desh Bandhu, Director of GLOBE Regional Office Asia-Pacific, said that the meeting included participation by most countries, and they are grateful for the planning and preparation the GLOBE Taiwan Team devoted to it, and expressed thanks to the support shown by Taiwanese departments. They expect greater participation and performance of the Taiwan team in future.
The most exciting part would be the student project exhibition on Day 1. After the exhibition, students shared their experiences through social media websites and expressed their excitement during the exhibition, as they were able to experience international exchange without departing the country. During the report process, not only were their thinking for independent research and improvement of English stimulated, students also learned about reporting techniques, organizational logic abilities, comprehension, and observation skills.
Besides the student science exhibition, the GLOBE Taiwan Office also arranged for a sharing session between Taiwanese and Thai teachers. Dr. Tony Murphy, Directof of the GLOBE Program Implementation Office, said that Taiwan universities each have a unique characteristic, and each university has a different approach toward the execution of the GLOBE Program and integration of science programs in education. He also supported the idea of allowing each university to develop their own uniqueness and direction, and he is most impressed by the efforts of Taiwanese teachers.
One of the purposes for annually holding the Regional Meeting is to seek more opportunities for international cooperation. Representatives addressed awkward situations they met while implementing the program and shared their achievements. Besides, the GLOBE Taiwan Office also arranged for a sharing session between Taiwanese and Thai teachers and JinShan field trip, which was conducted by teachers and students from The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University.
