Wu Ta-You Memorial Award, established by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), is to encourage the academic development of younger researchers and award the grants. Dr. Takeshi Emura, Japanese Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Statistics (GIS) of National Central University (NCU), was elected the one of the winners of the award in 2017 for his outstanding research accomplishment in statistics.

Dr. Emura’s latest research is to conduct statistical analysis of the survival data from cancer patients, including time of death and of tumor recurrence. Such data analysis bears great significance in developing new types of therapies for cancer and in the formula of predicting the tumor progression. The analytical result will also make a major contribution to medical science and the pharmaceutical industry. With the support of biostatisticians from the United States, Singapore, and South Korea, Dr. Emura has been making further improvement in the statistical methods. Meanwhile, Kitasato University in Japan applied Dr. Emura’s statistical methods to analyze patients’ data. Dr. Emura expected that he could collaborate with medical researchers in Taiwan in the future.

“I believe that as you do something or visit some place, there must be some crucial element that attracts you to do so. Just like a trip to Europe is to taste the good local wines. The most essential principle to enjoy life is to have something, something that is worth focusing on and investing most of your time and effort in. Even though it may look like a plain and simple thing, yet the most valuable part always lies deep inside the thing you love,” said Dr. Emura. His words just reveal what statistics meant to him: in the detailed and sophisticated mathematical formulas, Dr. Emura finds the solution to his dreams come true.
