Grasping Weather’s Secret in Hand: Department of Atmospheric Sciences Established International Cooperation with Korea Meteorological Administration

Posted on: 2018-10-11

The Weather Radar Center (WRC) under Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Radar Meteorology Laboratory under the Department of Atmospheric Sciences (DAS) of National Central University (NCU) have worked in collaboration since 2016. The Wind Synthesis System using Doppler Measurement (WISSDOM) developed by the NCU research crew is to measure the three-dimensional wind field over the complex terrains in Taiwan. Since the terrain in Pyeongchang area was quite undulating, the WISSDOM was thus adopted by KMA. During the 2018 Winter Olympic Game, the WISSDOM helped analyze immediately the 3D wind field structures at competition venues, providing data of weather change for forecasters to make judgments during the sports events.

To strengthen and continue the mutual cooperation, the WRC delegation visited NCU on October 2, 2018, scheduling a meeting with research crew members at the Radar Meteorology Laboratory under the DAS. In the meeting, delegates from both sides discussed the latest research progress and potential joint projects in the future; Dr. Yu-Chieng Liou and Dr. Kao-Shen Chung, delegates of NCU, made presentations on the topics mentioned. Later on, delegates of the WRC visited the Taiwan Experimental Atmospheric Mobile Radar (TEAM-R) and the VHF Radar station. Dr. Yen-Hsyang Chu, Dean of College of Earth Sciences introduced to the guests the history and current situation of the VHF Radar. After the tour, Dr. Chu on behalf of the Radar Meteorology Laboratory, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the WRC delegation from KMA.

According to the MOU, the Radar Meteorology Laboratory at NCU will continue to collaborate with the Korean agency, focusing on several aspects such as research faculty and technology exchange, analytical methodology and data sharing, organizing collaborative observation experiments and science workshops, and publishing co-authored research articles, hoping to achieve a win-win situation with the above interactions.
