NCU collaborates with Korea Meteorological Administration in weather monitoring and forecast during 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics

A team organized by Dr. Yu-Chieng Liou from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences (DAS) of National Central University (NCU) joined a field observational experiment in South Korea, which was part of the preparatory efforts prior to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Dr. Liou, who specializes in radar meteorology and data assimilation, led the NCU Radar Meteorology Laboratory delegation to send a mobile meteorological radar TEAM-R (Taiwan Experimental Atmospheric Mobile Radar) to Daegwallyeong weather station in PyeongChang in January, 2017. Their mission was to participate a pre-experiment designed for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The data sets observed by TEAMR-R allowed the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasters to assess the advantages of deploying radar systems at that particular site for weather monitoring during the Olympic Games.

In addition, by using an advanced analysis system called WISSDOM (Wind Synthesis System using Doppler Measurements) developed by Dr. Liou, KMA was able to provide real-time update of the wind field over the complex terrain in PyeongChang.

After the Winter Olympics, KMA plans to extend the analysis domain of WISSDOM to the entire Korean Peninsula, and provide wind information on an operational basis. This system has also been adopted by Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) during the Taoyuan Agriculture Expo and the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games in 2018. It is now routinely utilized by NCDR for their severe weather monitoring system.

Dr. Liou’s contribution was recognized by KMA. He was nominated by KMA for the 2019 Korea Government Award. Dr. Liou was invited to attend the 2019 World Meteorological Day ceremony held in Seoul to receive the award. He is the first Taiwanese to have won this honor.
