In the Best Universities Ranking of 2019 conducted by Global Views Monthly Magazine, National Central University (NCU) ranked fifth place among comprehensive universities in Taiwan for four consecutive years. Particularly, NCU ranked top among other universities in the indicator “international co-authorship” with the highest percentage, 39.6%, which was 6% higher than that of the university that ranked second place, which was 33%.

There were six major aspects for rating a university at the ranking, and 35 separate indicators in total were used to examine all six aspects: five indicators for rating social impact, nine for evaluating academic and research accomplishments, four for teaching performance, seven for internationalization and income of continuing education and university-industry cooperation, respectively, and three for examining the financial structure. Each indicator was standardized by the T-distribution of the provided raw data from universities; the score for each item was further weighted and summed up for the ranking. This ranking aims at examining universities from diverse aspects, and it is now one of the crucial indexes of higher education in Taiwan.

NCU endeavors to promote the idea of carefree studying. The university ranked third among universities in Taiwan in terms of the sum of stipends provided by the self-raised university fund to students. Also, there are several types of scholarships provided. NCU supports and encourages students to enhance their foreign language proficiency, and financial support is also provided for students’ overseas study. Regarding academic and research accomplishments, NCU also outperformed other universities. In the past five years, NCU ranked third in Taiwan in the h-Index, a metric measuring productivity and citation impact of academic and research publications. The index indicated that there were influential periodicals and essays published by NCU members in significant international journals, demonstrating the strong academic and research energy of NCU.

In such a keen competition among higher education institutions, NCU keeps polishing herself in every aspect, including teaching, research, and social service.
